Thank you to all of the parents who attended Hillside Public Schools' Open Office Hours this past Tuesday. We had a huge turnout! A special thank you goes out to all of our staff who dedicated their time to assist parents, and Supervisor Mrs. Okparaeke for organizing this day!

This is unity, this is Hillside. Hillside Public Schools just completed an absolutely monumental Ruby Bridges Walk! Students, staff, administrators, Hillside Police Officers, Board of Education members, and community members converged from all corners of Hillside to walk in harmony from Hurden Looker Elementary School to Hillside High School! Led by Superintendent Glover, Colonel Drakeford, the Hillside NAACP, and @hillsideajrotc students, Hillside Public Schools staff, Community Stakeholders, and students from Hurden Looker, Ola Edwards Community School, and Deanna G. Taylor Academy marched in honor of Ms. Ruby Bridges, the first black student to integrate an elementary school in the United States in 1960! Twenty-five students from Hillside High School-Junior Officers' Reserve Training Corps (JROTC) and Peer Leadership classes, participated in a community service project at the Community Foodbank of New Jersey in Hillside, on October 27th. During this trip, students packaged over 1,000 bags of pasta to help alleviate hunger and poverty in the community. The students are looking forward to future projects and opportunities! On Wednesday, September 27th, 2023, Hillside High School hosted a College Fair. The Cafeteria was crowded with students and parents, conversing with representatives from Universities such as TCNJ, Drew, and more! Shoutout to Principal Woolard, and Hillside High School staff!

On September 18th Hillside High School Student participated in an event with America's Grow a Row to help feed the homeless. We received a wonderful thank you from their Manager Connie Miller: "Hello Hillside High School! Thank you all for your hard work in gleaning corn and apples with us at Longmeadow Farm on Tuesday! It was nice to see so many people working together to give fresh food to communities in need. Altogether, you gleaned about 1,500 pounds of corn and 1,500 pounds of apples, which provides 12,000 servings of healthy, farm-fresh food that so many people will be able to enjoy. What an amazing way to spend your morning and feed so many people. We appreciate all that you did for us and for the people that we serve!" Bravo Students and Ms Deutsch who accompanied our children.

Shout out to Ms. Carriann DeSanto at Hillside High School, who received a Congratulatory letter from the President of the College Board! This letter thanks Ms. DeSanto for her work in helping to evaluate and score close to 5.2 million AP Exams, back in June 2023, alongside 23,000 other high school teachers and college faculty!

In attendance were other local schools including our sister battalions-Irvington and Union High School. Our students stood out as they were in their JROTC uniforms, interacting with other schools and expressing their interest in joining the military! Each year JROTC programs must conduct what is called a Service-Learning Project. Students are able to identify essential needs in their school or community and then decide on their approach. This year the JROTC program partnered with Hurden Looker Elementary School as they worked through their theme of Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies! JROTC students (periods 1-3) and Peer Leadership (period 4) explained the importance of nutrition and physical fitness to the elementary students, and also cheered from the sidelines to encourage all who participated! On September 13, 2023, six (6) Hillside High School JROTC cadets attended the West Point Experience hosted in Newark, NJ. In attendance were other local schools to include our sister battalions-Irvington and Union High School. I must say our students stood out as they were in their JROTC uniforms (looking sharp)! The overall gathering was a great opportunity for our students to learn firsthand from a successful West Point graduate of color. CPT Wilfred Aoua, Diversity Admissions Officer, for the US Military Academy (USMA) spoke from his own experience both at West Point and the military. He shared the benefits of attending USMA, the opportunity it presents (academic and financial) and the process of applying to the Academy. In our group we had a senior, Steven Akli, that is very interested and exchanged information with the West Point representatives. All of the students were given materials about West Point and a few giveaways.

The Comets Opening Day football concession stand exploded! All the food, including Graham's famous fried hotdogs with fries, was super tasty. The Class of 2024 gives special thanks to the Hillside Alumni football fans and Bernardsville Fans, we were sold out at halftime! #hhs

On Saturday, September 16, 2023, from 1 - 4 p.m., the Union County Board of County Commissioners is hosting a FREE Flu Vaccination Clinic on-site at the Town Hall Employee Parking Lot on Memorial Drive! Parents, please bring your child's most recent immunization card. There will be a back-to-school resource drive, food, fun, and free haircuts available.
